Thefundingwillgotowardafive-yearrestorationproject.Ateamofexpertpreservationists—broughtinbytheTunisiangovernment—willnotonlymaintaintheoutsidefacadeofthecolosseumbutalsoconservetheoriginalwaterdrainagesystem,whichstillworksafter1,years.
Perschlerexplainedthat,hopefully,therestorationofElJemwillincreasetourisminTunisiaandhelpboostlocaleconomies.Moreimportantly,theU.S.-Tunisiancollaborationonthesite’srestorationrepresentsa“statementaboutourgrowingrelationshipwithTunisia,”hesaid.
